Generally, when a hybrid battery fails, it's usually just a few cells in the battery that have failed. So rebuilders replace just those cells and recharge all the others up to spec. Some local electronics guys have started businesses rebuilding these batterys for around $1,000 to $1,500 while the dealers charge around $3,000 for a rebuilt battery. In 2016, the hybrid battery pack died. I didn't want to shop for a new car and I really wanted to make it to 200,000 miles. I decided to replace the battery. I shopped around a bit. The dealer wanted $3,500 and their battery came with a 3-year warranty. The Blue Book value of my car with 180k miles was only about $3,000.
I just test drove a 2014 Jetta Hybrid SEL which is listed for a decent price, and before I pull the trigger, I want to know how long the battery will last. If I remember correctly, the HV battery is warranted for 8/100. It'll last a long time, but at a constantly diminished capacity, just like your cell phone battery.
As well, real world data indicate that the batteries tend to last the lifetime of the car*, with failure rates taking 12 years to reach 5%. This means that the battery is a wear item on the order of an engine or a transmission, and can safely be considered to last the full lifetime of the car. Currently on the wait list for a RAV4. The hybrid is a longer wait so I’m considering getting the standard. I’m not in a huge rush so I don’t mind but they said it could take 6-8 months since the waitlist is about 200 people long. But I do like that the hybrid is AWD. Any input is appreciated
A Toyota RAV4 Hybrid can last at least 200,000 miles and can even last over 300,000 miles providing it’s properly maintained and driven conservatively. At an average of 15,000 miles per year, you can expect to get 20 years of reliable service from it before requiring expensive repairs.
